The written word is a tool to obtain wisdom, but to use it, we must be literate.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress in 2024:
"Thirty-one percent of fourth-grade students performed at or above the NAEP Proficient level on the 2024 NAEP reading assessment, which was two percentage points lower compared to 2022 and 4 percentage points lower than 2019."
That means 69% of 4th graders were not proficient readers.
When we rely on others to 'comprehend' for us, we also receive their biases. Then others have the power to shape our thinking.
When we can read, discern fact from opinion, truth from bias, and understand historical and current written documents and literature, then we can think for ourselves.
Wisdom and IQ: Are they related?
Wisdom is knowledge that comes from experience and observation. While a high IQ may enhance wisdom, high levels of education and intellect do not necessarily mean one is wise. In fact, there are times when a high level of intellect may actually hinder the acquisition of wisdom.
